BRUCE BENDERSON 'MY STORY, MY DREAM' стр.179

I was beginning со realize the frightening power the public grants too easily to stars, even when it comes to subjects in which they have absolutely no expertise. I've done ads for, among others, Coca-Cola and Chrysler. I'd always been spokesperson and sponsor for the Quebec Cystic Fibrosis Association. I know that being visible, listened to, and imitated is part of a star's life, that what you say or do can carry a lot of weight and have enormous consequences. But in Seville, for the first time, that power seemed stifling. Thus, everything that I did from then on, everything I said, would be repeated, analyzed, and commented upon, even if it had nothing to do with my career as a singer.

"It's because you're not only a singer," Rene told me. "Now you're a star in Quebec. The biggest one they've ever had. And one day, not far off, you'll be a star in France and the United States too, everywhere in the world."

To me, that also seemed like an outrageous remark. I would never have dared to say such a thing. But Rene had no qualms about it, not only in private, between ourselves, but in public. I knew some people thought he was an egomaniac who'd tell anyone that one day I'd be known as the greatest singer in the world. In Quebec, it had become something of a national joke.

But that was how Rene did things. He never worried about counting his chickens before they hatched. He saw himself as a millionaire and acted like one long before he became rich; he saw me as a gigantic star, even though in the United States I was still only a small, rising star who could disappear in a twinkle.

Opening for Michael Bolton was exhausting, particularly because we had to change cities every day. But we were finally doing what we had always dreamed of doing: working in the country that created the "big time." In the beginning, I sang for very restless, impatient audiences who were waiting to hear Michael Bolton and weren't interested in me. I had a defective sound system and very little space because the stage was taken up by the mixers and instruments for the main act. What's more, the concerts were held outdoors, and it was still daylight when I went onstage.
